Research Rabbit Hole: The Man Who Changed Photography

A new episode of Research Rabbit Hole, our Facebook Live show, premiered Monday evening, June 14, at 9 p.m. ET.

Season 1, Episode 11, begins in London in 1855, and travels back in time to the origins of photography and the great Daguerre. But he’s not the only mover and shaker who influenced “sun pictures” in the 19th century. In this episode, you’ll meet an inventor who dreamed of a different future for photography—and made it come true.

Research Rabbit Hole: Posing 101

A new episode of Research Rabbit Hole, our Facebook Live show, premiered Monday evening, April 5, at 9 p.m. ET.

Season 1, Episode 7, provides answers to a deceptively simple question: Ever wondered why and how Americans of the 1860s posed for portraits? In this episode, we review instructions by traveling photographer B. Bradley to his patrons to help them make the most of their visit, and guidelines suggested by master daguerreian pioneer Marcus Aurelius Root in his 1864 photographer’s handbook, The Camera, and The Pencil.

Research Rabbit Hole: The Backwards Image Problem

A new episode of Research Rabbit Hole, our Facebook Live show, premiered Monday evening, February 22, at 9 p.m. ET.

Season 1, Episode 4, explores the issue of viewing early photographs—daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes—in reverse. Photographers, inventors and other technologists of the mid-19th century were adaptable and most likely could have fixed it, but they did not. Why? Because lateral reversal is a 21st century problem!

The full season is available on YouTube.

July 1 Talk: Cardomania! The Rise and Fall of the Carte de Visite

The Civil War Generation was the first to grow up with photography. This transformative medium made it possible for Americans from all walks of life to preserve their own likeness, a privilege once reserved only for the wealthy. During photography’s early years, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes ruled the portrait world. Then, on the eve of the Civil War, a curious new format landed in America—the carte de visite. After hostilities began, hundreds of thousands of citizen soldiers and sailors posed for their likenesses. Countless millions of photographs were produced. Significant numbers of these most intimate and personal artifacts survive today. Some are finding a place among the iconic images of the war. Join Ron Coddington, author of four books of collected Civil War portraits and editor and publisher of Military Images magazine, as he tells the story of the rise and fall of the carte de visite—and what became of them.
