Military Images Traveling Exhibits program brings compelling Civil War photographs and personal stories to communities across the United States. These exhibits offer a unique opportunity for museums, libraries, historic sites, and cultural institutions to connect with visitors through powerful, image-driven storytelling that shines a light on lesser-known histories.
We currently offer two exhibits:
- Faces of Freedom: A tribute to Black soldiers and sailors who served in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and U.S. Navy.
- Faces of Civil War Nurses: A look at the women—Union and Confederate—who served on the front lines of caregiving and sacrifice.
Each exhibit includes:
- High-quality prints of original wartime portraits from private collections and public institutions.
- Interpretive plaques that detail the personal stories and service of each individual featured.
- Promotional materials, including posters and a digital exhibit catalog (accessible via QR code).
These materials are provided free of charge. Host institutions are responsible for mounting and displaying the items and returning them when the exhibit concludes. Printed catalogs can be arranged upon request.
To enrich the experience, we also offer optional in-person programming, including opening events with Military Images editor and publisher Ron Coddington and local historians, tailored to highlight regional Civil War connections.
The goal of the Traveling Exhibits program is simple yet profound: to bring the faces of history to life, meet people where they are, and spark meaningful engagement with the past.
For more information or to inquire about hosting Faces of Freedom or Faces of Civil War Nurses, or to discuss other Civil War subjects (battles, states, etc.), please contact Ron Coddington at 703-568-1616 or militaryimages@gmail.com.
